4 Things I Learned from the Roots & Shoots Disney Delegates
At the Disney Kids and Nature Celebration last week, four fantastic youth leaders from Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots were honored for their commitment to making positive change happen for people, animals and the environment. These inspiring young leaders from all over the globe came together at the Walt Disney World Resort to be recognized for their incredible work.
4 Things I Learned from the Roots & Shoots Disney Delegates
1. Recycling 25 TONS of electronic waste isn't easy...unless you have plenty of help!
In Indiana, Lauren G.'s Roots & Shoots group collected more than 25 tons of electronics and appliances for recycling in a citywide event at her group's school.
I also learned that Lauren is pretty "Goofy"!
2. When it comes to making positive change happen, there is plenty of room for fun and "games".
In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rachel S. is involved in creating a cooperative project between her Roots & Shoots group and a basketball initiative, Promo Jeune Basket. She has been a leader in using basketball as a vehicle to promote the values of Roots & Shoots to local youth. She initiated the “Green Basket” project with a group of young girls who are now leading green initiatives with Roots & Shoots and have started seven new Roots & Shoots groups.
Also, I learned that Rachel is a very good dancer!
3. It's not impossible to change the ways of large corporations.
In China, Sijia W. led a group of youth in a project to calculate the carbon footprint of a leading corporation in Shanghai. They advised the company on ways to save energy in everyday life and encouraged the company to voluntarily go carbon neutral. The company is now a green business leader in China.
Sijia was very excited to meet Dale of the dynamic duo, Chip n' Dale!
4. You don't have to live near your favorite animals to make positive change happen for them.
All the way from South Dakota, Rashaun B. led his Roots & Shoots group in learning about the plight of polar bears in the arctic. Group members raised over $600 to support education and protection of these animals.
Rashaun is very strong - here he is with the "whole world in his hands"!
Fondly,
Adrienne Mae
